MATHEMAGIC 13: SQUARES - PART 1

1 = 1²

1 + 3 = 2²

1 + 3 + 5 = 3²

1 + 3 + 5 + 7 = 4²

and so on ...

1 + 3 + 5 + ... + (2n - 1) = n²

How many squares are there on a chessboard?

Solution: One  8x8 square, four 7x7 squares, nine  6x6 squares ...
sixty-four  1x1 squares, and this gives in total
1² + 2² + 3² + 4² + 5² + 6² + 7² + 8² = 204 squares.
